# Handle planning exceptions

Review planning problems such as late stops or missing drivers, compare the suggested alternatives and accept or dismiss them.

Updated October 4, 2026

**Who can do this:** Requires the Exceptions feature. Not available to customer or supplier accounts. Configuration: platform administrators.

Transportial watches your planning and raises an exception when something goes wrong or is about to, for example a stop that is overdue or a trip without a driver close to departure. For each exception it suggests one or more alternatives you can pick from.

## Open the exceptions

1. Click the home icon (**Dashboard**) in the header.
2. Click the **Exceptions** tab.
3. The page **Replanning suggestions** opens with all open exceptions.

## Exception types

* **Action failed** and **Trip canceled with work outstanding**
* **Trip timing drift**, **Trip not started** and **Stop overdue**
* **Time window at risk**
* **No vehicle assigned** and **No driver assigned**
* **No vehicle signal**
* **Shipment not planned**

Each exception has a severity: **Critical**, **Warning** or **Info**.

## Find exceptions

* Search by trip, reason or exception.
* Sort by **Severity** (default), **Creation date**, **Delay** or **Cost difference**.
* Filter on **Status** (Open by default; also Accepted, Dismissed, Closed automatically), **Severity**, **Exception type**, **Trip**, **Suggestion type**, **Evaluation**, vehicle, **Vehicle group / fleet**, driver and creation date.

Your filters and sort are remembered.

## Handle an exception

1. Read the exception header: type, severity, the trip (or shipment) with its number, start, vehicle, drivers and status. Click the trip to open it.
2. Read the alternatives below it, ranked as **Option 1**, **Option 2** and so on. Each shows its type, such as **Minimal change**, **Move to another trip**, **Replan all**, **Assign**, **Notify customer**, **Contact driver** or **Check manually**, and the reasoning.
3. Click **Evaluate** on an option to calculate whether it is feasible and what it does to delay and cost.
4. Compare the result, for example "+30 min delay · Δ cost". An option marked **Not feasible** is best skipped.
5. Click **Accept** on the option you choose, or **Dismiss** to reject an option.
6. Check the trip afterwards to confirm the change is what you expected.

Handled options keep their status tag until you reload the list. When the problem goes away by itself, for example because a driver was assigned or the stop was completed, the exception is closed automatically and the reason is shown.

## For administrators: configure exceptions

1. Open **Settings** and click the **Environment** tab.
2. Open the **Planning** section.
3. Switch **Detect planning exceptions automatically** and **Close exceptions when they no longer apply** on or off.
4. Under **Exceptions to raise**, pick the types to use, or leave it empty for all types.
5. Set the thresholds, such as **Minutes past the planned start before a trip counts as not started** or **Hours before departure a trip must have a vehicle and a driver**.
6. Click **Save**.

The **Trip cancellation** block in the same section decides what happens to a shipment when its trip is canceled half-way, for example **Flag the shipment as requiring replanning**.
