# Set up a geofence on a location

Turn a location into a geofence and get an alert when a vehicle enters or leaves the zone.

Updated October 4, 2026

**Who can do this:** The FMS platform feature and permission to update locations.

A geofence is a circle around a location. When a vehicle with a connected board computer or tracker drives into or out of the circle, Transportial can raise an alert. Use geofences for depots, customer sites and parking areas where you want to know when vehicles arrive or leave.

## Before you start

* Your platform needs the FMS feature, and your vehicles must send their positions to Transportial (see [Board computers](/en-us/help/board-computers)).
* The location must exist and have a correct position on the map. See [Manage locations](/en-us/help/locations).

## Create a geofence from a location

1. Open the side menu (☰) and choose **Locations**.
2. Click the location to open it.
3. Open the **Geofences** tab.
4. Switch on **Act as geofence**.
5. Enter the **Radius** in meters. The default is 500\. The map shows the circle as you type.
6. Switch **Alert on enter** and **Alert on exit** on or off. Both are on by default.
7. Click **Save**.

To stop using the geofence, switch off **Act as geofence** and click **Save**. The location itself stays.

## Manage all geofences in Fleet FMS

The Fleet FMS view on the dashboard has a **Geofences** tab that lists every geofence with its **Name**, **Radius**, **Alert on enter** and **Alert on exit**.

1. Open the Fleet FMS view (see [Fleet FMS view](/en-us/help/fleet-fms-view)) and choose the **Geofences** tab.
2. Click **New geofence**.
3. In **Search a location to fence**, type and choose the location.
4. Set the radius and alerts, then click **Save**.

Use **Edit** on a row to change a geofence. Use **Remove** to delete it. The confirmation explains that the location stays and only the zone and its alerts are removed.

Keep the radius tight on busy industrial estates. A large circle around one site can also cover the neighbors' gates, which gives misleading arrival alerts.

Geofence alerts appear with your other alerts. See [Alerts](/en-us/help/alerts) for where to find them and how to be notified.
