# Calculate a route with the route planner

Calculate distance, duration, ETAs, toll, costs and CO₂ for a route with your vehicle profile, compare alternatives and export it to PDF.

Updated October 4, 2026

**Who can do this:** Requires the Route planner feature. Not available to customer or supplier accounts.

The route planner calculates a route between two or more addresses for a specific vehicle. It shows distance, duration, an ETA per leg, toll and other costs, and emissions. Use it to quote a customer, check a route or compare alternatives. It does not create a trip.

## Calculate a route

1. Click the home icon (**Dashboard**) and open the **Route planner** tab.
2. Optionally choose a vehicle under **Start from a saved vehicle**. Its type, fuel, emission standard, dimensions, weights, axles and CO₂ class are filled in for you. You can still change everything.
3. Set the **Start date & time**. All ETAs are calculated from it.
4. Choose the **Vehicle type**, **Fueltype** and **Emission standard**.
5. Enter the first address and pick it from the suggestions.
6. Enter the next address. Click **\+ Add location** for more stops.
7. Drag the handles to change the order of the stops, or click **Remove** to drop one.
8. Click **Calculate route**.

Always pick an address from the suggestion list. Typed text that is not picked cannot be placed on the map. You need at least two placed locations.

## Advanced vehicle options

Open **Advanced vehicle options** to route with the real vehicle:

* **Dimensions & capacity:** length, width and height, load capacity, **Maximum Weight** and **Empty weight**.
* **Axles:** click **\+ Add axle** per axle and set **Drive axle**, **Lift axle**, **Axle load** and **Technical axle load**.
* **Dangerous goods:** switch on **ADR** and choose the **ADR classes** and **Tunnel restriction code**. ADR is never copied from a saved vehicle; set it yourself.
* **CO₂ emission class:** classes 1 to 5.

Your vehicle settings and start time are remembered in your browser for the next visit. Click the **Columns** icon to hide or show the settings form.

## Read the result

* The top row shows **Distance**, **Duration**, **Costs overview** (all route costs together) and **CO₂ (WTW)**.
* The map shows numbered stops: green for the first, red for the last.
* **Legs** lists each leg with distance, duration, ETA and toll.
* **Cost breakdown** shows toll per country or segment, other costs and the total.
* **ESG & Emissions** shows well-to-wheel and tank-to-wheel CO₂e with the calculation standard used.

Which costs are calculated (all costs, toll only or none) depends on your platform's settings.

## Compare routes

1. Fill in the vehicle and locations as above.
2. Click **Compare routes**.
3. Compare the cards for distance, duration, toll and CO₂. Badges mark the **Fastest** and **Cheapest** route and whether it is a toll route.
4. Click a card or a line on the map to highlight it.
5. Click **View on map** to open the full result for that route. Use **Back to comparison** to return.

If the alternatives are nearly identical, Transportial hides the duplicates and tells you so. Depending on your platform's settings, the alternatives come from one routing engine or from several engines side by side.

## Export or start over

* Click **Export to PDF** to download the route with its legs, delivery times and cost overview.
* Click **Reset** to go back to the form.
