Driver signing

Transportial's eCMR software issues an electronic CMR consignment note from each consignment, signed by sender, driver and consignee in the app or by link. Every step is an event in an append-only, SHA-256 hash-chained log, so the note is tamper-evident, and roadside inspectors open it from a QR code.

## What it does

A code-level inventory of what eCMR Software: Digital Consignment Notes covers, in the terms you will find inside the product.

### Issue and lifecycle

One electronic consignment note per consignment, issued where the consignment already lives.

* Issued from the consignment
Issue the eCMR from a consignment, or for every consignment on a Trip at once. Sender, consignee, carrier, places, goods and instructions come from the order and are frozen in the issue event.
* Clear status
Issued, in transit once the required take-over signatures are in, delivered when the consignee signs. A note can only be cancelled before take-over; a new one can then be issued.
* Your own numbering
Notes are numbered per year behind a prefix you choose, for example ECMR-2026-000123.
* Issued by the driver
When your platform allows it, drivers issue a missing eCMR for the consignments on their Trip from the [driver app](/en/product/driver-app).

### Signatures

* Sender, carrier and consignee
Each party signs in its own capacity (CMR boxes 22, 23 and 24); successive carriers sign as well. Which take-over signatures are required is a platform setting.
* Driver app, also offline
The driver signs as carrier in the OpenMove app. Notes stay available without coverage; signatures are queued on the phone and synced when the connection returns.
* Share links, no account
Sender and consignee sign through a secure link, without a Transportial account. The consignee can record reservations the same way.
* What a signature records
Name, role, time and channel (app, web, link or API), plus the device position when you require it. Signers accept the eCMR terms before they sign.

### Tamper-evident record

* Append-only event log
Issue, signatures, reservations, amendments, delivery and cancellation are each recorded as an event. Nothing is overwritten.
* SHA-256 hash chain
Every event is hashed together with the hash of the event before it. Recomputing the chain shows whether any entry was changed, and which one.
* Reservations and amendments
Carrier and consignee reservations (CMR art. 8 and 30), corrections and the sender's right of disposal (art. 12) are added as new events on top of the original particulars.
* Delivery without a signature
If the consignee refuses or is absent, the carrier can confirm delivery with a reason and their own signature, if your platform allows it.

### Inspection and documents

* Inspection link and QR code
A read-only link lets roadside authorities and inspectors view the note and its history. The QR code on the PDF opens it.
* PDF with the consignment
The eCMR renders as a PDF carrying the QR code to the inspection link, stored with the consignment's [documents](/en/product/documents).
* Link validity
Signing links stay valid 30 days after issue and the inspection link 90 days, counted from delivery once delivered. Both are configurable.
* Opt-in per platform
eCMR is switched on per platform. Companies that don't use it keep the paper CMR PDF generated from the same order data.

## How it works

1. ### Switch on eCMR
Enable the feature for your platform and set the required signatures, link validity and number prefix.
2. ### Issue the note
Issue it from the consignment or for a whole Trip; the particulars are taken from the order.
3. ### Sign at take-over
The sender signs through its link, the driver signs as carrier in the OpenMove app, and the note moves to in transit.
4. ### Deliver and keep
The consignee signs or records reservations. The PDF sits with the consignment and the inspection link stays available.

## Why the record can be trusted

A paper [CMR](/en/glossary/cmr) is trusted because the signed originals exist in several hands. An electronic note needs a different guarantee. Transportial records every step as a new event in an append-only log and links each event to the one before it with a SHA-256 hash. Change one stored event and every hash after it stops matching, so recomputing the chain shows exactly where the record was touched.

Corrections work the same way. A reservation about damaged packaging, a corrected weight or a new place of delivery under the sender's right of disposal is a new, signed event; the particulars as issued stay visible underneath.

## Signatures where the parties are

The driver signs in the [OpenMove app](/en/product/driver-app), which keeps the notes of the Trip on the phone and queues signatures when there is no signal. Sender and consignee rarely have an account in your TMS, so they sign through a secure share link instead. Each signature records who signed, in which role, when and through which channel.

## Paper CMR, eCMR and eFTI

eCMR is opt-in per platform. Companies that don't switch it on keep printing the CMR from the order on the pre-printed form layout, and the free [CMR generator](/en/tools/cmr-generator) covers a one-off note.

The EU eFTI Regulation (EU) 2020/1056 obliges authorities to accept freight transport information electronically from certified eFTI platforms and applies from 9 July 2027\. Transportial is working toward eFTI certification.

## Concepts & terminology

The words this module uses, with links to the full glossary where a term has its own page.

[Open the glossary](/en/glossary)

eCMR[Glossary](/en/glossary/e-cmr)

The electronic consignment note under the Additional Protocol to the CMR Convention concerning the electronic consignment note.

CMR[Glossary](/en/glossary/cmr)

The consignment note for international road transport under the CMR Convention.

Hash chain

Each event stores a SHA-256 hash of its content and of the previous event's hash, so changing one entry breaks every link after it.

Reservation

An observation by the carrier or consignee about the goods or packaging, such as damage or missing packages.

Right of disposal

The sender's right to change, for example, the consignee or place of delivery while the goods are under way; recorded as an amendment.

Inspection link

A read-only link, also as a QR code on the PDF, through which authorities and inspectors view the note.

eFTI

Electronic freight transport information under Regulation (EU) 2020/1056, applying from 9 July 2027.

Technical details

Each event is hashed with SHA-256 over its content and the previous event's hash; recomputing the chain reports the first event that does not match. Signing and inspection links are scoped per note and expire after a configurable number of days.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is eCMR software?

Software that creates, signs and keeps the CMR consignment note electronically instead of on paper. In Transportial it is part of the TMS: issued from the consignment, signed in the driver app or by link, and stored with the consignment.

### Is an eCMR legally valid?

In countries that have ratified the e-CMR additional protocol to the CMR Convention, the electronic consignment note has the same standing as the paper one. Check that this holds for every country on your route; this is not legal advice.

### Do the sender and consignee need a Transportial account?

No. They sign through a secure share link, and the consignee can record reservations the same way.

### What if the driver has no signal?

The OpenMove app keeps the notes of the Trip on the phone. Signatures are queued and synced when the connection returns.

### How does a roadside inspector see the eCMR?

Through the inspection link: a read-only view of the note and its history, opened from the QR code on the PDF.

### Can an eCMR be changed after it is signed?

Not silently. Reservations, corrections and the sender's right of disposal are added as new events, and the SHA-256 hash chain shows if any stored event was altered.

### Is Transportial eFTI-certified?

Not yet. The eFTI Regulation (EU) 2020/1056 applies from 9 July 2027, and Transportial is working toward eFTI certification.

### Do we have to switch to eCMR?

No. eCMR is opt-in per platform; without it you keep the paper CMR PDF generated from the order.

### Can we keep using TransFollow?

Yes. The [TransFollow integration](/en/integration/transfollow) remains available for companies that already run their e-CMRs there; the native eCMR keeps the note inside Transportial.
