FedEx integration

Book FedEx shipments from your consignments with labels and commercial invoices, cancel them before pickup, and follow FedEx tracking with ETA and delivery on the stops.

What is FedEx?

FedEx is a global express transportation company with international and domestic express, economy and ground services. Software connects through the FedEx APIs on developer.fedex.com: Transportial uses the Ship API to create and cancel shipments and the Track API to follow them.

What syncs between FedEx and Transportial

  • To FedEx

    Consignments → FedEx shipments

When a trip forwarded under a capacity contract that uses the FedEx integration is confirmed, each consignment is booked as a FedEx shipment on your account. Packages come from the goods with weight and dimensions, the ship date from the start of the loading window, and the consignment number is the reference.

  • Into Transportial

    Labels and tracking numbers

Labels — PDF or ZPL — and the master and package tracking numbers are stored on the shipment.

  • To FedEx

    Commercial invoice for international shipments

International shipments carry customs data from the goods: description, quantity, weight, value, HS code and origin. FedEx’s commercial invoice is stored on the consignment with the labels.

  • To FedEx

    Canceling before pickup

Canceling the trip cancels its FedEx shipments that have not been picked up yet; planners can also cancel a single shipment from the consignment.

  • Into Transportial

    Tracking, ETA and stop completion

Status, scan events, the estimated delivery window and who received the shipment come back on the consignment. Pickup completes the loading stop and delivery the unloading stop, at FedEx’s event time.

  • Into Transportial

    FedEx numbers booked elsewhere

Add any FedEx tracking number to a consignment to follow a shipment created in FedEx Ship Manager or anywhere else.

How to connect FedEx

  1. Parcel carriers are switched on per platform: ask us to enable them for your Transportial account.

  2. Create a project on the FedEx Developer Portal (developer.fedex.com) with the Ship and Track APIs, link your FedEx account and note the API key and secret key.

  3. Add the FedEx integration in Transportial with the API key, secret key, your FedEx account number, the default service, the label format and how parcels reach FedEx: a regular scheduled pickup, drop-off at a FedEx location, or a pickup you arrange with FedEx yourself. You can start in the FedEx sandbox.

  4. Set a capacity contract’s communication method to this integration. Trips forwarded under that contract are booked at FedEx as soon as you confirm them.

Sync frequency and limits

  • Shipments are booked when the trip is confirmed; consignments added later are booked on the next trip update, never twice with the same integration.
  • Open tracking numbers are checked every 60 minutes by default — configurable per integration — until the shipment is delivered, returned or canceled.
  • The FedEx Track API follows up to 30 numbers per call.
  • FedEx needs a phone number for shipper and recipient: Transportial uses the location’s number, then the customer’s, then your own company’s.
  • A shipment can only be canceled before FedEx has picked it up.

Typical use case

A forwarder ships samples and urgent documents for fashion brands from Amsterdam to buyers in the UK, the US and Asia. These consignments are planned on a trip under a FedEx capacity contract with International Priority as default; confirming the trip books them, and the labels and commercial invoices are printed from the consignment for the daily FedEx pickup. The account team sees each shipment’s scans and delivery window on the consignment, and the delivery stop closes when FedEx reports it delivered.

Frequently asked questions

Which FedEx services can I book?

International Priority, International Priority Express, International Economy, International Connect Plus, Regional Economy, FedEx First, Priority Express and Priority, plus US domestic services such as FedEx Ground, Priority Overnight, Standard Overnight, 2Day and Express Saver. Set a default on the integration or choose per shipment.

Does Transportial schedule FedEx pickups?

No. On the integration you state how parcels reach FedEx — a regular scheduled pickup, drop-off at a FedEx location, or a pickup you arrange with FedEx — and that is passed on with every shipment.

Can I cancel a FedEx shipment from Transportial?

Yes, before FedEx has picked it up: canceling the trip cancels its open FedEx shipments, and a planner can cancel a single one from the consignment.

Can Transportial compare FedEx rates with other carriers?

No. The integration books, labels, cancels and tracks with your own FedEx account; it does not shop rates across carriers or create return labels.
