German truck toll: frequently asked questions
How is the German truck toll calculated?
The toll is the distance driven on tolled roads multiplied by a rate per km. That rate is the sum of four official components: infrastructure, air pollution, noise and CO₂. Each depends on the technically permissible maximum mass, the number of axles, the Euro emission class and the CO₂ emission class. Example: a truck over 18 t with 4 axles, Euro VI and CO₂ class 1 pays 32.4 ct per km, so 100 km costs €32.40.
From how many tonnes do you pay toll in Germany?
From more than 3.5 t technically permissible maximum mass. Since 1 July 2024 the Lkw-Maut covers vehicles and combinations over 3.5 t used for goods transport (before that the threshold was 7.5 t). Craftsmen's vehicles under 7.5 t are exempt when they carry material, equipment or machines for their own trade or deliver handcrafted goods non-commercially.
What does the German toll cost per km?
Between 11.4 ct and 51.6 ct per km, depending on the vehicle. A common 40-tonne tractor-trailer (over 18 t, 5 or more axles, Euro VI, CO₂ class 1) pays 34.8 ct per km. The table on this page shows every official rate for the weight class you select.
Do electric trucks pay the German toll?
No. Zero-emission trucks (CO₂ class 5) are exempt until June 30, 2031; the exemption was extended beyond its original end date of 31 December 2025. Zero-emission vehicles up to 4.25 t are exempt permanently. You can register the vehicle with Toll Collect as toll-exempt to avoid unnecessary enforcement checks.
Which roads are tolled in Germany?
All Autobahns and all federal roads (Bundesstraßen), at the same rate. Exceptions are the A6 between the French border and Saarbrücken-Fechingen, the A5 between the Swiss/French border and Müllheim/Neuenburg, and privately financed sections that charge their own toll.
