It requests the fastest route and checks it against the tolled crossings HGVs use (Dartford, the M6 Toll, the Mersey Gateway and Silver Jubilee bridges, the Tyne Tunnels, the Blackwall and Silvertown tunnels and the Tamar Bridge) and against the official boundaries of the London Low Emission Zone, the Congestion Charge zone and the English Clean Air Zones.
Each charge uses the operator’s or council’s published price for your truck. Crossings with prices that depend on the time of day or on an account (Dartford overnight, Blackwall and Silvertown off-peak with Auto Pay) are shown at the standard daytime price.
UK truck tolls and charges: frequently asked questions
Are there truck tolls in the UK?
There is no per-mile toll for trucks on UK motorways. HGVs pay at a small number of tolled crossings and roads, foreign-registered HGVs of 12 tonnes and over pay the HGV Road User Levy, and cities charge older trucks for entering clean-air zones.
Which UK crossings charge trucks?
The main ones are the Dartford Crossing (A282), the M6 Toll, the Mersey Gateway and Silver Jubilee bridges at Runcorn, the Tyne Tunnels (A19), the Blackwall and Silvertown tunnels in London and the Tamar Bridge (A38, eastbound only). The Severn crossings have been free since 2018.
What does the Dartford Crossing cost for a truck?
An HGV with two axles pays £4.20 and one with more than two axles pays £8.40 per crossing (£3.60 and £7.20 with a pre-pay account). The charge applies from 06:00 to 22:00; crossing overnight is free. There are no barriers: pay online by midnight the day after crossing.
How much is the M6 Toll for an HGV?
An HGV with three or more axles pays £20.90 and a two-axle HGV £20.20 for the full length of the M6 Toll; shorter trips cost less. Prices are reviewed quarterly, so check the M6 Toll’s own price table before quoting.
What is the HGV Road User Levy?
A charge on HGVs of 12 tonnes and over for using UK roads. UK-registered HGVs pay it with their vehicle tax. Foreign HGVs buy it per day, week, month or year before driving on a UK motorway or A road; for a Euro VI truck over 38 tonnes a day costs £9.67 and a week £30.95.
How many days of levy does a foreign truck need?
One day for every calendar day (midnight to midnight) the truck uses a UK motorway or A road, so a trip that enters on Monday evening and leaves on Tuesday needs two. The calculator picks the cheapest mix: a week pass is cheaper than daily passes from about three days on.
Which clean-air zones charge HGVs?
The London Low Emission Zone, and the Clean Air Zones in Birmingham, Bristol, Bath, Bradford, Sheffield, Portsmouth and Newcastle/Gateshead charge HGVs that do not meet Euro VI, per day. Scottish low emission zones in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee and Aberdeen fine non-compliant vehicles instead of charging.
What does a truck pay to enter London?
A Euro VI truck pays no Low Emission Zone charge; an older one pays £100 a day, or £300 below Euro IV. HGVs are not charged by the ULEZ. Inside central London every vehicle also pays the £18 Congestion Charge during charging hours, and HGVs over 12 tonnes need a free HGV Safety Permit.
