The limits below come from Regulation (EC) No 561/2006 as amended by Regulation (EU) 2020/1054. A week runs from Monday 00:00 to Sunday 24:00.

Driving and rest times: frequently asked questions
How many hours can a truck driver drive per day?
Nine hours. Twice a week the daily driving time may be extended to 10 hours (Article 6(1) of Regulation 561/2006). Daily driving time counts all driving between the end of one daily rest and the start of the next daily or weekly rest.
What is the maximum weekly driving time?
A driver may drive at most 56 hours in one week and 90 hours in any two consecutive weeks (Article 6(2) and 6(3)). So after a 56-hour week, the next week allows at most 34 hours of driving. Weekly driving must also stay within the maximum weekly working time of Directive 2002/15/EC.
What does Article 6(5) say about other work?
Under Article 6(5), a driver must record as 'other work' all working time other than driving, including work for another employer, as well as any time spent driving a vehicle for commercial operations outside the scope of the regulation. Periods of availability must be recorded too, either by hand on a record sheet or printout, or with the manual input function of the tachograph.
When does a driver have to take a break?
After at most 4.5 hours of driving, a driver must take a break of at least 45 minutes, unless a rest period starts. The break may be split into at least 15 minutes followed by at least 30 minutes, in that order (Article 7).
How long is the daily rest period?
A regular daily rest lasts at least 11 hours and must be taken within 24 hours of the end of the previous daily or weekly rest. It may be reduced to at least 9 hours no more than three times between two weekly rests, or split into at least 3 hours followed by at least 9 hours (Articles 4(g), 8(2) and 8(4)).
How long is the weekly rest period?
A regular weekly rest lasts at least 45 hours, a reduced weekly rest at least 24 hours. In any two consecutive weeks a driver needs two regular weekly rests, or one regular and one reduced; a reduction is compensated en bloc before the end of the third week following. The weekly rest must start no later than six 24-hour periods after the previous one, and a regular weekly rest may not be taken in the vehicle (Article 8).
What counts as a week for the driving time rules?
A week is the fixed calendar week from Monday 00:00 to Sunday 24:00 (Article 4(i)). The 56-hour weekly limit and the 90-hour limit for two consecutive weeks are counted per calendar week, not per rolling seven days.
Do the driving time rules apply to vans?
Since 1 July 2026 they also apply to vans and other light goods vehicles over 2.5 tonnes (including any trailer) used for international transport or cabotage. Goods vehicles over 3.5 tonnes were already covered, in national and international transport, apart from the exemptions listed in Article 3.
