EDI

EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) is the structured, computer-to-computer exchange of business documents — such as orders, invoices, and shipping notices — in a standardised electronic format.

Electronic Data Interchange

In logistics, EDI is widely used to exchange transport orders, status updates, and freight documents between trading partners without manual re-keying. Common standards include UN/EDIFACT and ANSI X12. EDI has been a backbone of supply-chain communication for decades and remains common in established partner networks.

Modern platforms often complement or replace traditional EDI with REST APIs and open models like OTM5, while still supporting EDI file exchange for partners who rely on it.

Frequently asked questions

Is EDI still used in transport?

Yes. Many large shippers, carriers, and ports still exchange data via EDI. Transportial supports EDI file parsing alongside modern REST APIs and the OTM5 open standard.
