No more WhatsApp groups, no more personal phone calls that leave no record. Transportial's in-app chat connects everyone in your operation in a structured messaging layer where every conversation is tied to the relevant trip or order.

Conversations live on the trip they are about — with read receipts and translation.

Key highlights

  • Real-time messaging: Powered by Socket.IO, messages are delivered instantly to all participants. No polling, no delays.
  • Conversation threads per context: Each trip, transport order, or ad-hoc conversation has its own thread. Dispatchers see all messages in context.
  • Office to driver: Dispatchers can message drivers directly from the Plan Board or the trip detail view. Drivers reply from the OpenMove app.
  • Push notifications: New messages generate push notifications on mobile devices and browser notifications on desktop.
  • Full message history: Every message is stored permanently. Search conversations, review what was communicated about a specific order.
  • Read receipts: See when a message has been delivered and read. Critical when you need to confirm a driver has acknowledged a route change.

How it works

  1. Open the conversation in context

Every trip and transport order has its own message thread. A dispatcher opens chat directly from the Plan Board or the trip detail view — no searching for the right group or contact.

  2. Message the driver

Messages are delivered instantly to the driver's OpenMove app with a push notification. Drivers reply from the cab without exchanging personal phone numbers with anyone.

  3. Know it was seen

Read receipts show when a message was delivered and read. When a route change goes out, you know whether the driver has acknowledged it — or needs a call after all.

  4. Cross the language barrier

Built-in translation lets a Dutch planner and a Polish driver read each other's messages in their own language, in the same thread.

  5. Keep the record

Every message is stored permanently against its trip or order. Months later, what was agreed about a delivery is still one search away.

Why WhatsApp groups fail transport operations

Most operations drift into WhatsApp because it is already on everyone's phone. Then the problems compound: one group per depot mixes fifty trips into one scrolling feed, urgent messages drown between memes, drivers use personal numbers that leave with them, and when a customer disputes a delivery, the evidence is on a former employee's phone.

Transportial's chat is structured the way the operation is structured. Each trip and each transport order carries its own thread, so the conversation about a shipment sits next to the shipment's data, documents, and status history. Anyone picking up the case — a colleague covering a shift, a manager handling an escalation — reads the full context in one place.

A communication trail you can stand on

When something goes wrong in transport, the first question is always "who told whom, and when". Phone calls leave no trace, and private messaging apps are outside the company's reach. Reconstructing a dispute becomes an exercise in competing memories.

Because every chat message in Transportial is logged against the relevant trip with timestamps and read receipts, the communication trail is part of the operational record. Instructions to the driver, the driver's report of a problem at the dock, the dispatcher's decision — all of it is searchable history, available for dispute resolution and for learning what actually happened.

Technical details

Chat is implemented over Socket.IO with room-based architecture. Messages are persisted to PostgreSQL. Push notifications use Firebase Cloud Messaging.

Frequently asked questions

Do drivers need a separate app for chat?

No. Chat is built into the OpenMove driver app, so drivers message dispatch from the same app that guides their trip. New messages arrive as push notifications on mobile and browser notifications on desktop.

Can I see whether a driver has read my message?

Yes. Read receipts show when a message was delivered and when it was read — important when you need confirmation that a route change or urgent instruction has been acknowledged.

Does chat work across languages?

Yes. Messages can be translated in-thread, so a planner and a driver who speak different languages can each read the conversation in their own language.

How long is message history kept?

Messages are stored permanently against their trip or transport order. You can search past conversations, review what was communicated about a specific shipment, and use the history in dispute resolution.

Is chat separate from the automated messages Transportial sends?

Chat covers live conversations between people — dispatchers, drivers, planners. Automated status updates to customers are handled by Message Automations, which fire on operational events and go out via email, SMS, WhatsApp, and other channels.
