Enterprise routing

Routing in logistics is never just "find the shortest path". Transportial's routing engine accounts for truck dimensions, hazmat restrictions, ferry crossings, maritime lanes, and air freight bookings, so the route you generate is the one your vehicle can actually travel.

Road

  • GraphHopper with truck model: Road routing is powered by GraphHopper using a custom truck model that accounts for vehicle height, weight, axle load, tunnel restrictions, and hazmat classifications.
  • Avoid restrictions automatically: Routes avoid roads with weight or height restrictions that the assigned vehicle cannot clear, automatically, without any manual intervention.
  • Real-time data integration: Connect to live traffic and road condition data to dynamically adjust ETAs and reroute when necessary.

Maritime

  • MARNET sea route calculation: Maritime shipments are routed using the MARNET global maritime network, calculating realistic sea-lane distances and transit times.
  • Port-to-port planning: Build multi-leg transport orders that combine road legs to and from ports with a sea crossing, all within a single transport order.

Air & Rail

  • Air freight booking management: Create and manage air freight bookings as legs within a multi-modal transport order, with flight details, AWB references, and status tracking.
  • Rail freight: Book and track rail freight legs with wagon numbers, departure/arrival terminals, and carrier references, all connected to the parent transport order.

Enterprise Routing with PTV

  • PTV xRoute/xTour integration: For operations that need the most advanced routing and tour planning capabilities, Transportial integrates with PTV xRoute and xTour.
  • Advanced optimisation: PTV enables complex constraints including multi-day tours, loading equipment, driver skill matching, and tight time-window scenarios.

How it works

  1. Start from the vehicle

Routes are calculated for the actual vehicle: height, weight, axle load and hazmat class determine which roads, tunnels and bridges are usable at all.

  2. Calculate the route

The routing engine returns the drivable route with distance, driving time and ETAs per stop — not the car route with truck problems left as a surprise.

  3. See the full cost

Toll, distance cost, working time and energy are itemised per route, so the cheapest route and the shortest route can be told apart before committing.

  4. Add other modes

For multimodal shipments, combine road legs with sea crossings routed over the MARNET maritime network, or air and rail legs with their own references — all within one transport order.

  5. Adjust visually

Edit routes on the map: add stops, reorder them, and see distance, time and cost update. For advanced tour planning, Transportial integrates with PTV xRoute and xTour.

Truck routing is a different problem from car routing

Consumer navigation solves for a vehicle that fits everywhere. A 40-tonne curtainsider does not: bridges have weight limits, tunnels have height and hazmat restrictions, city centres have access rules, and some turns physically cannot be made. A route that ignores this is not slightly wrong — it ends with a truck reversing out of a village or a fine for a restricted tunnel.

Transportial routes on GraphHopper with a custom truck profile: the vehicle's height, weight, axle configuration and cargo class are inputs to the route calculation, and restricted roads are excluded before the route exists, not flagged after. The same calculation produces realistic driving times, because trucks accelerate, climb and traverse roundabouts differently from the cars most ETAs are calibrated on.

Routes priced, not just measured

Two routes of similar length can differ by hundreds of euros once tolls, driver hours and fuel are counted. Transportial itemises route cost — toll, distance, working time and energy — at calculation time, so the trade-off between the fast toll road and the longer free route is a number, not a hunch.

Cost-aware routing also feeds everything downstream: quotes are priced on the route the truck will actually drive, trip profitability uses real route costs, and CO₂ per trip is computed from the same data for customer reporting and CSRD compliance.

One order across road, sea, air and rail

European freight is rarely road-only: a container runs by truck to the port, crosses by short sea, and finishes on a chassis at the other end. Managing each leg in a different tool means re-typing references and losing track of the handoffs. Transportial models multimodal transport as legs within a single order — road legs routed by the truck engine, sea legs over the MARNET maritime network with realistic sea-lane distances, and air and rail legs with their AWB and wagon references.

The whole chain stays trackable as one shipment. Statuses, documents and communication attach to the same order regardless of which leg they belong to, and the customer's tracking link shows the journey end to end.

Technical details

The routing engine runs as a dedicated backend mode. Road routing uses GraphHopper's OpenStreetMap-based graph. Maritime routing uses the MARNET dataset. PTV calls are made via its REST API.

Frequently asked questions

Does routing account for truck restrictions?

Yes. Routes are calculated with a truck profile covering height, weight, axle load, tunnel and hazmat restrictions. Roads the assigned vehicle cannot legally or physically use are excluded from the calculation itself.

Are toll costs calculated?

Yes. Toll is itemised per route alongside distance, working time and energy costs, so route alternatives can be compared on total cost rather than kilometres alone.

Can Transportial plan sea, air or rail legs?

Yes. Maritime legs are routed over the MARNET global maritime network, and air and rail legs are managed with their own references — all as legs of a single transport order, tracked end to end.

What routing engines does Transportial use?

Road routing runs on GraphHopper with a custom truck model over OpenStreetMap data. For operations needing advanced tour planning, Transportial integrates with PTV xRoute and xTour as an enterprise option.

Is CO₂ calculated per route?

Yes. CO₂ emissions are calculated from the route and vehicle data and recorded per trip, feeding customer reporting and CSRD/ESG compliance without separate tooling.
